Zenju's Path

Congratulations to Zenju Earthlyn Manuel who just returned from the Buddhist Film Festival Europe held in Amsterdam. Zenju's Path, a documentary film directed by Kathryn Golden, was included in the festival. As the title suggests, this film chronicles..."the life & work of Zenju Earthlyn Manuel one of the first African-American female Soto Zen priest in the United States."

Included in the film is a clip of the concert Sisthas of the Drum produced on May 23, 2010 which apparently was a hit with the audience.

Thank you for the work you are doing in the world Zenju and for spreading our musical offerings to many cultures.

Welcome Amsterdam readers! We appreciate you.

Get warmed up for Ancient Song : Present Rhythm at the Rhythm Sistas drum circle on May 15th

Saturday May 15, 2010

Mosswood Park
W. Mac Arthur at Broadway, Oakland

The "Rhythm Sista's Women of Color Drum Circle" is reconvening for spring and summer 2010. This is a free event, and all drumming and dance skill levels are welcome.

The circle is a place of love, community, healing and empowerment for all women of color and their children. Drumming is an ancient form of communication that has passed on to us from the ancestors. When we drum we celebrate life. We drum to renew and heal ourselves, and as we heal we pass it on to others. The positive rhythms vibrate out from Mosswood Park to the Oakland community encouraging cultural awareness, pride and unity. Sista's please come, and bring your positive energy. Please bring a drum or percussion instruments, water, fruit and/or veggies to share.

There are drums and percussion instruments available at a first come first basis. Drum lesson for beginners start at 1pm - 1:30pm.

"Rock Stars"

The Sistahs have been asked to come back and share our rhythms during the Sunday service at Lakeshore Avenue Baptist Church. The Musical Director, Mikki Boyd, referred to us as "rock stars" when I expressed our appreciation for being asked back so soon. We look forward to celebrating the joy of Spirit and the joy we feel when we play.

Following the service, we will facilitate a forum on the history of the drums, poly rhythms, the healing aspect of drumming and/or whatever else folks want to know and experience.
